Purposeful writing

We have been trying to give meaning to our writing, and the children have expressed interest in writing each others names.  Today, we gave them clip boards, paper and a pencil and encouraged them to find places around our classroom that had their friends names on it.  We asked them to find at least 5 different friends names, and then see if they could draw their pictures.  This was a fun activity, and gave them a personal reason for writing and drawing.  They found the names on art work, portfolios, bins, and other places.  They had to be thinkers and communicators as some of them asked their friends how to write.
Some of the children wrote the names like a list, using numbers. For example 1. Katie 2. Sadiya
They were really proud of their writing as well :)
